Top Car Maintenance is a small publication for people who would rather do the work themselves. Garage Safety

Car maintenance carries real risks. Never get under a vehicle supported only by a jack; always use rated jack stands on solid, level ground, chock the wheels, and set the parking brake. Let the engine cool before draining oil or touching the exhaust, because hot oil and exhaust parts cause serious burns. Run an engine only with the garage door open, since exhaust carbon monoxide builds up quickly in a closed space.

Wear gloves and eye protection when handling motor oil, cleaners and detailing chemicals, keep them away from children and pets, and dispose of used oil and filters at a recycling center, never down a drain. Do not wash or detail paint that is hot from direct sun. Inflate tires only to the pressure on the driver's door jamb sticker, not the maximum printed on the sidewall, and do not leave a portable inflator running unattended. An OBD2 scanner reads codes; it does not replace a qualified technician for brake, airbag, steering or safety-system faults. Always follow your owner's manual for fluid specifications and service intervals.
